The author of Skulls in the Stars (known as Dr. SkySkull in various obnoxious and hopefully thoughtful comments around the blogosphere) is an associate professor of physics, specializing in optical science, at UNC Charlotte. The blog covers topics in physics and optics, the history of science, classic pulp fantasy and horror fiction, and the surprising intersections between these areas.
Skulls in the Stars is the title of a short story by Robert E. Howard, first printed in 1929. The protagonist, Solomon Kane, is a Puritan who must go against his own moral and ethical code to defeat a creature of darkness. Most of the Solomon Kane stories feature this conflict between Kane’s fundamentalism and the realities of a world which is not always black and white. This seemed like a perfect theme for the blog as a whole.
